Road repair

Sam Smith - I've just returned from a 150 mile trip to Mount Desert Island and was reminded of the saying that in Maine there are two main seasons: winter and road repair. (Summer is short. Last tear it came on a Tuesday.)

I actually counted 11 orange signs  claiming "Road Work Ahead." In fact, as is often the case, five of these were devoid of any indication of rejuvenation, but nonetheless provided anticipatory excitement for the next few miles. It was unclear as to whether the signs were merely premature or if the road staff had left them as a memorial of what they had been recently up to.

The six remaining signs were in the best road repair tradition, including a number of cases in which the road was reduced to one lane and a formidable character presented us with a stop sign on a pole as cars passed us in the other direction.

It was, in fact, a typical day for the state. Maine visitors might be inclined to ask for alternative directions but should be warned of a number of classic responses:
  • How far is it to Waldoboro? About 5000 miles the way you're headed
  • How to I get to Wiscasset? Can't get there from here.
  • How do you get to Searsport? Usually get my brother to take me.
