Sam Smith – If the Democrats in Congress were playing football, they would be throwing balls down the field to non-existent recipients and running 70 yards only to discover on crossing the goal line that they didn’t have a ball.
The congressional Democrats seem to have forgotten that they are on a team. They are not individuals running for reelection and proving how wonderful they are. Part of being on a team is playing with people you wished would do better but knowing that bragging about your own virtue won’t bring them on course.
In older times, the leadership would have come up with some special deals for West Virginia and Arizona to make their senators behave better. And long before now, the overall measure would have been changed to garner support from every needed vote. As noted here before, even $1.5 trillion is $1.5 trillion more than nothing. And you can’t pass a New Deal budget if you don’t have a New Deal Congress..
Congress is a place where even the best settle for the best they can get away with.
